Thanks for the recommendation - I just read an article by Huntington. Relatively compared to European nations, appeals to ethnicity have much less persuasive power in the US, I think. The US is a relatively propositional nation, I would at least argue.
The USA is not a propositional nation. Long discussion there, but I abhor that formulation. Perhaps read "Who Are We?" by Samuel Huntington.
